한국여성해사인협회(WIMA KOREA)가 '2026 선원의 날'을 기념한 '해양환경살리기 공동 캠페인 – 플로깅 챌린지'를 6월 19일 부산 송도해수욕장 일원에서 개최하였다.

이번 행사는 정부기관과 대학, 해운기업, 협회 등 해양산업 각 분야가 한데 모여 연합 플로깅으로 진행됐다는 점에서 의미가 크다. 매년 6월 25일 국제해사기구(IMO)가 지정한 '세계 선원의 날(Day of the Seafarer)'을 맞아, 바다 위에서 일하는 선원의 노고를 기리고 해양환경 보호의 가치를 시민과 함께 나누기 위해 마련됐다.

행사에는 한국여성해사인협회(WIMA KOREA), 한국해기사협회, 한국해양수산연수원, 부산지방해양수산청, 장금상선㈜, 우양상선㈜/코리아쉽매니지먼트, 윌헴슨쉽매니지먼트 코리아, 한국건강관리협회, 한국해양대학교 해사대학 등 9개 기관·단체가 공동으로 참여했다. 단체 임직원과 가족, 학생, 전·현직 선원, 일반 시민 등 170여 명이 함께 송도 해변의 쓰레기를 수거하며 '깨끗한 바다'에 한목소리를 냈다.

특히 미래 해기사로 성장할 한국해양대학교 해사대학 학생들이 대거 참여해 행사의 의미를 한층 빛냈다. 이들은 해양환경 보전 활동에 직접 참여하며 해양인의 사회적 책임과 ESG 가치를 실천하는 뜻깊은 시간을 가졌다. 바다를 일터로 삼게 될 예비 해기사들이 앞장서 해변 정화에 나선 만큼, 행사의 상징성을 더했다는 평가다.
행사 참가자들은 송도해수욕장 일대에서 해양쓰레기와 생활폐기물을 수거하는 플로깅 활동을 진행했으며, 개인 텀블러 사용 장려, 폐플라스틱 수거, SNS 인증 캠페인 등 다양한 친환경 프로그램에도 참여했다. 참가자들은 수거한 쓰레기의 양에 따라 기념품을 받으며 환경보호의 의미를 되새겼고, 텀블러 사용을 통해 일회용품 사용 줄이기에도 동참했다.

이번 캠페인은 참여 기관들의 자발적 후원과 역할 분담으로 완성됐다. 부산지방해양수산청은 에코백을, 한국해기사협회와 장금상선㈜은 문화상품권을 지원했으며, 우양상선㈜/코리아쉽매니지먼트는 기념떡을, 윌헴슨쉽매니지먼트 코리아는 우산을, 한국건강관리협회는 건강 키트를 제공했다. 한국해양수산연수원은 친환경 음료 트럭을 운영해 참가자들의 참여를 도왔다.

한 참석자는 "정부와 대학, 기업이 한마음으로 모여 해양환경 보호에 동참한 뜻깊은 자리였다"며 "특히 미래의 바다를 책임질 예비 해기사들이 앞장서 준 만큼, 작은 실천이 모여 더 큰 변화로 이어지길 기대한다"고 전했다.

참여 기관들은 앞으로도 해양환경 보호와 선원 복지 증진을 위한 산·학·관 협력 활동을 이어갈 계획이다.

WIMA KOREA Hosts Joint Beach Plogging Challenge for 'Day of the Seafarer 2026'

BUSAN, South Korea – On June 19, the Women in Maritime Association Korea (WIMA KOREA) hosted a joint marine environmental campaign, the "Plogging Challenge," at Songdo Beach in Busan to commemorate the upcoming Day of the Seafarer (June 25).

The event brought together over 170 participants, including government officials, university students, shipping executives, former and current seafarers, and local citizens. The campaign was organized to honor the dedication of seafarers and to promote the value of marine environmental protection.

Key Highlights of the Campaign

• A Powerful Coalition: A total of nine organizations and companies collaborated for the cause, including WIMA KOREA, the Korea Marine Officers' Association, the Korea Institute of Maritime and Fisheries Technology (KIMFT), the Busan Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries, Sinokor Merchant Marine, Wooyang Shipping/Korea Shipmanagers, Wilhelmsen Ship Management Korea, the Korea Association of Health Promotion, and Korea Maritime & Ocean University (KMOU).

• Empowering Future Seafarers: A large group of students from the Maritime College of KMOU—the future leaders of the maritime industry—actively participated, adding strong symbolic value to the event by practicing ESG values first-hand.

• Eco-Friendly Activities: Participants collected marine debris and household waste along the beach. The event also featured eco-friendly initiatives, including encouraging the use of personal tumblers, collecting waste plastics, and running social media awareness campaigns.

Collaborative Support and Future Outlook

The campaign was made possible through voluntary sponsorships and roles shared among the participating organizations, who provided eco-bags, cultural gift certificates, umbrellas, health kits, and a sustainable beverage truck to encourage the volunteers.

"It was a meaningful event where the government, academia, and industry united to protect our oceans," noted one attendee. "Seeing the future seafarers take the lead gives us great hope that these small actions will lead to significant change."

Moving forward, the participating organizations plan to continue their joint industry-academia-government cooperation to protect the marine environment and improve seafarer welfare.
